This combination of undated file photos provided by the San Diego Sheriff's Department shows James Lee DiMaggio, 40, left, and Hannah Anderson, 16. DiMaggio abducted Anderson, and is also suspected of killing Anderson's mother and brother at his home in Southern California. On Saturday, Aug. 10, 2013, after searchers spotted DiMaggio and Anderson from the air, two highly specialized FBI hostage teams rescued Anderson and killed DiMaggio in a shootout at their encampment at a remote, alpine lake in Idaho. Hannah Anderson, the 16-year-old southern California girl who was abducted last week and rescued Saturday by FBI agents, was reunited with her father, Brett Anderson, on Sunday at a Boise hospital where she was flown hours after her rescue from a camp near an alpine lake, FBI spokesman Jason Pack said.

The man that kidnapped Anderson after murdering her mother and younger brother, James Lee DiMaggio, was shot and killed by the FBI on Saturday, ending a six-day manhunt that began on Aug. 4 when firefighters responded to DiMaggio's home in rural San Diego County.

Christina Anderson, 44, was found dead in the garage, and the burned body of 8-year-old Ethan Anderson was found in the home.

After failing to find Hannah Anderson, authorities set off an Amber Alert that ultimately was activated in five states -- California, Oregon, Washington, Nevada and Idaho.

But it wasn't until a group of horseback riders had an encounter with the kidnapper and his victim that the search could successfully resume.

Mark John, 71, and his wife Christa, along with Mike Young and his wife Mary, shared details of their meeting with DiMaggio and Anderson. "They just didn't fit," said John. "He might have been an outdoorsman in California, but he was not an outdoorsman in Idaho ... Red flags kind of went up."

Not only did the pair's lack of openness compared to other recreationists from the area caught the attention of the locals, but they were going in the opposite direction of their stated destination, the Salmon River.

Also, neither was wearing hiking boots or rain gear. The 40-year-old DiMaggio, described as an avid hiker in his home state of California, was carrying only a light pack. It even appeared Anderson was wearing pajama bottoms.

It wasn't until Thursday afternoon, when the Johns returned home and saw the girl's photographs on the news that they made a connection. After confirming with the Youngs, Mark John immediately called Idaho State Police, setting off the investigation in Idaho.

The rescue teams were dropped by helicopter about two and a alf hours away from where the kidnapper and his victim were spotted. The teams surrounded the camp and waited until Anderson and DiMaggio were no longer near each other before moving in. It was reported that DiMaggio fired a shot at the authorities and that made them take action and firing back, fatally wounding him.

Hannah was not aware that her mother and brother had been killed as she was driven across several states and into the Idaho wilderness, San Diego County Sheriff Bill Gore said.

Gore also said that the 16-year-old girl was being held "under duress" by James Lee DiMaggio, indicating that Hannah Anderson did not accompany DiMaggio willingly.

"Our focus now is on trying to get Hannah all the resources, the help she needs to get through this extremely traumatic ordeal she's been through," he said.
