A South Florida man allegedly robbed a Wendy’s customer at gunpoint after the stranger refused to buy him chicken nuggets, according to reports.
The armed robbery happened last Thursday, June 23, outside the fast-food restaurant at 8295 NW 27th Ave in northwest Miami-Dade.
The accused, 34-year-old John Earl Taylor, approached the victim as he got out of his car and was walking towards the eatery, according to the arrest report.
Taylor asked the stranger if he could buy chicken nuggets for him.
However, the victim refused to do so saying he only had enough money to buy his own meal, Miami-Dade police said.
As the victim returned to his vehicle after eating, Taylor approached him — this time brandishing a semi-automatic gun with an extended magazine.
Taylor then allegedly ordered the victim to hand over his gold chain and car keys. Fearing for his life, the victim complied with Taylor’s demands, WTFL reported.
Taylor then took off in the stolen vehicle, according to reports.
The next morning, a burglary detective spotted the stolen car parked in a parking space in the area of Northwest Seventh Avenue and 79th Street.
Taylor quickly got into the vehicle and fled the scene as backup units arrived, police said.
He was taken into custody after he crashed the vehicle in the area of Northwest 10th Avenue and 119th Street, police said.
Taylor was taken to Jackson North Medical Center, where he was treated for minor injuries before being booked into the Metrowest Detention Center.
He is facing charges of armed robbery/carjacking, driving with a suspended license, and fleeing and eluding police.
A similar carjacking incident was reported in April this year when a homeless woman stole a car parked outside a church in Long Island, New York, and then ran over its elderly owner.
The victim, 73-year-old Lorraine Lombardo, a former nun who lives in St. James, had come to the Historic St. Mary's Episcopal Church, to donate some clothes.
Lombardo had left the motor running when she briefly exited her car. That’s when the alleged carjacker, 50-year-old Doreen Dunbar jumped behind the wheel and attempted to make a getaway.
She reversed, accelerated, and knocked down Lombardo, before partially running over the elderly woman's legs as she opened the driver’s side door and tried to wrestle the steering wheel back from Dubar’s hands.
Dunbar then fled the scene on foot after crashing the vehicle into a nearby guardrail and a fence.
She was captured a short time later with the help of a helicopter and a K9 unit. She was arrested on charges of first-degree assault and second-degree robbery, police said.
