Former Republican Rep. Liz Cheney continued to campaign for Vice President Kamala Harris ahead of the November elections, saying at the birthplace of the GOP that choosing her over Donald Trump is "our duty."
Speaking at a campaign event in Ripon, Wisconsin, Cheney urged voters to "reject the depraved cruelty" embodied by Trump's project. "We cannot turn away from this truth," said Cheney, who largely departed from the Republican party following the January 6 assault on the Capitol.
Cheney made reference to the incidents, recalling that Trump "did not condemn them." "That's who Donald Trump is," added Cheney, who also served as vice chair of the House select committee that investigated the attack and supported impeachment efforts against him.
Eventually, her stances led the House GOP to oust her as conference chair and replace her with a top Trump ally, New York Rep. Elise Stefanik. Trump reacted to Cheney's latest statements in an interview with Fox News, calling her a "low IQ stupid war hawk."
"As a member of the J6 Unselect Committee of Political Hacks and Thugs, ILLEGALLY DESTROYED & DELETED all documents, information, and evidence," he added in a post on his social media platform, Truth Social.
Trump also criticized her father, former Vice President Dick Cheney, who has said he will vote for Harris as well. "Her father, Dick, was a leader of our ridiculous journey into the Middle East, where Trillions of Dollars were spent, millions of people were killed – and for what? NOTHING," Trump said.
Liz Cheney has clarified that she has serious policy disagreements with Harris on a variety of issues, but chose to support her because she feels that "those of us who believe in the defense of our democracy, in the defense of our Constitution, and the survival of our republic have a duty in this election cycle to come together to put those things above politics."
She is far from the only Republican who has come out supporting the vice president in her bid to the White House. Others include former Illinois Rep. Adam Kinzinger, former Georgia Lt. Gov. Geoff Duncan, and former Arizona Sen. Jeff Flake.
