A ram has been sentenced to three years in jail after it reportedly head-butted a woman to death.
Adhieu Chaping was left with multiple broken ribs and fractures after the ram launched an attack on her. The 45-year-old was repeatedly headbutted by the animal as she tried standing up.
The bloodied victim succumbed to her injuries at a hospital later.
"The ram attacked by hitting her ribs and the old woman died immediately," Lakes State Police major Elijah Mabor told Sudan's Eye Radio.
Following the incident, the ram was arrested and it spent a week in custody before traditional leaders in Rumbek East County, South Sudan, handed the bizarre sentence.
The animal will spend three years behind bars at a military camp in Aduel County headquarters in Lakes State, reports said.
Mabor confirmed the bizarre arrest and sentencing.
"Our role as police is to provide safety and separate fights," Makuac said.
"The ram was apprehended and currently under custody at a police station of Maleng Agok Payam."
"The owner is innocent and the ram is the one who perpetrated the crime so it deserves to be arrested then later on the case shall be forwarded to customary court where the case can be handed amicably."
The sentencing comes just days after the ram’s owner, Duony Manyang Dhal was ordered to a pay a fine of five cows to the family of the victim.
In South Sudan, this is known as "blood compensation", according to The City Review.
There is a law in Lakes State ruling that any animal that kills a person will be compensated to the deceased's family.
As per the rule, the ram will be gifted to Chaping's family once it is released from prison, reports said.
