Gordon Ramsay’s 21-year-old daughter Holly just revealed that she was sexually assaulted while in university. The daughter of the reputed Hell’s Kitchen chef admitted she suffered PTSD as a result of the experience and spent three months in a mental health hospital.
Holly Ramsay’s revelation was aired on her podcast, "21 & Over," where she detailed the effects of being sexually assaulted at the age of 18. At the time, she was attending Ravensbourne University but was forced to leave having been admitted to London’s only private mental health hospital, the Nightingale Hospital in Marylebone.
As she recounted her heartbreaking ordeal, she said: “I went to university, studied fashion design, and I loved it. But by the second half of the first year I was being affected by my PTSD and I had no idea that this was happening.”
Holly did not name an assailant. She said that she did not tell anyone about the repeated incidents until a year after they occurred. She had hoped that things would just roll along if she just buried them in a box at the back of her mind. No matter how much she tried to go about her normal self, the trauma was affecting her without her knowing it.
“I was going out a lot, missing class because I'd been out.”
“I wasn't enjoying myself and I was struggling a lot more but didn't notice because I would just think that it was just a hangover or just a lot of work," she said.
She was hospitalized and diagnosed with PTSD, anxiety and depression.
Holly added that she has been going to therapy three times a week since her hospitalization.
Around six months ago, the relatively new podcaster had a realization that she was not being authentic on her social media accounts and wanted to be more realistic with her posts. She decided to speak out about her depression as she often felt guilty for having these feelings.
According to Today, Ramsay's daughter recalled experiencing feelings of depression when she was 13. During this time, her mental health struggles had gone on an ebb and flow for a number of years. Holly accounted how she struggled with these intense feelings, but had no one to discuss her experience with.
Holly continued, "It's definitely a journey, but I hope by speaking out, I can help other people speak out or ask for help and even just talk to their friends and just and normalize the conversation around mental health."
