A Republican lawmaker has introduced articles of impeachment against U.S. district judge James Boasberg, who the Trump administration has been targeting after issuing orders to block the deportation of hundreds of Venezuelans to El Salvador and set a Tuesday deadline for the government to provide more information on the matter.

Concretely, Rep. Brandon Gill said on Tuesday he introduced the articles against "radical activist Judge James Boasberg," adding that he "is guilty of high crimes and misdemeanors and should be removed from office."

"Chief Judge Boasberg, in violation of his oath of office, did knowingly and wilfully use his judicial position to advance political gain while interfering with the President's constitutional prerogatives and enforcement of the rule of law," reads a passage of the resolution.

The judge's actions have catalyzed a showdown between the executive and judicial branches, with president Donald Trump and loyal Republicans calling for his impeachment, and Chief Justice John Roberts issuing a rare rebuke of criticism against the judiciary.

Trump slammed Boasberg on social media earlier Tuesday: "HE DIDN'T WIN ANYTHING! I WON FOR MANY REASONS, IN AN OVERWHELMING MANDATE, BUT FIGHTING ILLEGAL IMMIGRATION MAY HAVE BEEN THE NUMBER ONE REASON FOR THIS HISTORIC VICTORY," Trump wrote in his social media platform, Truth Social.

"I'm just doing what the VOTERS wanted me to do. This judge, like many of the Crooked Judges' I am forced to appear before, should be IMPEACHED!!! WE DON'T WANT VICIOUS, VIOLENT, AND DEMENTED CRIMINALS, MANY OF THEM DERANGED MURDERERS, IN OUR COUNTRY. MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!!!" he added.

Trump's attacks on the judiciary have been echoed by several Republicans, including Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) head Elon Musk. He has routinely called for the removal of judges ruling against government wishes. Musk also reposted Gill's announcement regarding the introduction of impeachment articles against judge Boasberg.

His calls have been rebuked by the American Bar Association, which earlier in March said it would "not stay silent in the face of efforts to remake the legal profession into something that rewards those who agree with the government and punishes those who do not."

The showdown is set to continue, as Boasberg set a Tuesday deadline for the administration to provide additional information regarding its decision to invoke the Alien Enemies Act, a centuries-old wartime law allowing for the swift deportation of foreigners who are refused the opportunity to go before an immigration or federal court judge.
