During Google's press event a couple of weeks ago for the new Nexus 7 and Chromecast, the company also announced that it would start to offer textbook purchasing and rentals this month. As promised, Google has made textbooks available for purchase or rent through the Google Play Books app.
Through the Google Play Books services U.S. customers can now buy or rent textbooks from Google's publishing partners. Most titles are available for rent for a six-month period and for prices that are considerably lower than the print editions offered in stores.

In line with this update, Google has also updated their iOS app of Google Play Books to include support for rental textbooks.
Another major update for the app is a new sepia reading mode and support for highlighting and note-taking in scanned pages of books.
