Just in time for Black Friday and the holidays, Google's Nexus 7 has gotten a much anticipated upgrade.
Over-the-air updates from Android 4.2 have began for the Nexus 7.
"The new Nexus devices just went live, and, as promised, Google has simultaneously started pushing the code for the latest iteration of our favorite mobile OS - Android 4.2 Jelly Bean - to theAndroid Open Source Project," Android Police reported.
Right now, it appears that the Nexus 7 will sell on Black Friday for Google's $199.
According to Android, "Nexus 7 is a full-fledged Android tablet that's designed to go where you go. With a stunning 7" display, powerful quad-core processor and all day battery life, Nexus 7 was built to bring you the best of Google in a slim, portable package that fits perfectly in your hand."
The Nexus 7 currently runs on Android's 4.1 operating system and has a 7-inch IPS, 1280X800 pixel display.
The tablet can store up to 16GB of memory and weighs 0.75 pounds.
According to Google, the Nexus 7 is "designed to go the distance." Users should expect "over 9 hours of HD video playback, 10 hours of web browsing or e-reading and up to 300 hours of stand-by time."
According to Consumer Reports Donna Tapellini, the Google Nexus 7 tablet challenges the iPad.
"With its bigger, excellent Retina display and a still-unmatched app store, the iPad still has the edge over the Nexus 7," Tapellini said. "But if you want a tablet in a smaller package for a lot less money, the Nexus 7 is worth thinking about."
While Consumer Reports has not tested the iPad mini, to date, Google Nexus 7 is "one of the best small tablets we've ever tested."
The Nexus 7 currently costs $199 for an 8GB model and $249 for a 16GB version - both versions are cheaper than Apple's lowest asking price.
