A woman was reportedly forced to jump from a moving vehicle to escape after she was kidnapped at knifepoint by a man she tried to help. The incident reportedly happened in the 24000 block of NE 28th street in Camas, Washington, about 20 miles east of Portland, Oregon on Saturday, Sept. 3.
The woman was reportedly in her car near Mill Plain Boulevard and Grand Boulevard in Vancouver on Saturday morning, Sept. 3, when a man approached her vehicle and asked her for some drinking water. The victim decided to help the man and provided him with some water. She also allegedly allowed the male suspect to get into her vehicle, New York Post reported.
However, once the man got inside the car, he allegedly pulled out a knife, threatened the woman, and took control of the vehicle. He then instructed the victim to drive to the area of NE 28th Street. When the car eventually slowed down on a dirt road near Fern Prairie, the woman quickly leapt from the vehicle and ran to evade her captor.
After running away and reaching the town of Camas, the woman screamed and banged on several doors for help. Homeowner Jamie Woods and his wife Caitlin Martin, who were awoken by the woman's screams, reportedly initially thought that the victim was intoxicated as they saw her trying to enter their back door, ABC News reported.
“She had told me that someone was trying to kill her and took her car,” Woods said. “So I said okay and I walked off into the street with her to see if I could see anything.”
When Woods walked into the street, he saw that the car that the woman was pointing to had just turned the corner. Woods then called 911 for help. Officers from the Clark County Sheriff's Office responded to the scene and immediately launched a search for the car based on the woman’s description.
A short time later, the officers were able to locate the vehicle. The suspect, however, evaded by speeding away. After a brief pursuit, the suspect was arrested and taken into custody. He was booked on first-degree charges of robbery and kidnapping, plus reckless driving and an attempt to elude charges.
Officers are still working to confirm the identity of the suspect since he refused to identify himself when he was apprehended.
