“Glee” has released a promo video for the Cory Monteith tribute episode, “The Quarterback” and it is going to be an emotional ride for viewers. Fox’s hit series will face Cory Monteith’s death head on, the actor died on July 31 at the age of 31 after suffering a drug overdose in a Canadian hotel room. The tragic news came just weeks before filming for the fifth season of “Glee” was set to begin. After months of mourning, real life-girlfriend and on-screen love, Lea Michele will finally have a chance to say goodbye to Monteith in “Farewell to Finn,” a tribute honoring Monteith’s life and work as his iconic “Glee” character.
Monteith had a life long battle with substance abuse but seemed to overcome his addiction after receiving treatment in rehab. However, after months of clean living a fatal mix of heroin and alcohol caused a tragic overdose. The “Glee” cast will finally say goodbye to Monteith and his on-screen character Finn in the third episode of Season 5 airing on Oct. 10. The emotional promo video opens with a panning shot of William McKinley High School followed by the “Glee” cast processing down the hallway carrying Finn’s favorite things including his drumsticks, his helmet, and a football.
The video continues and reads “The hardest word to say is goodbye.” The students gather in front of Finn’s locker and adorn the space with notes, flowers and candles. The most touching scene is of Lea Michele as her on-screen character Rachel Berry is hysterics, seeking comfort from Will Schuester, the students loving glee club adviser. The show will be emotionally moving for the audience, as it was for the cast. Ryan Murphy, the creator of “Glee” revealed that the poignant performances of the cast were genuine and heartfelt. “Almost everything in that episode is from the first take of every performance because the actors and the crew had a really hard time shooting it,” Murphy said.
“I've never seen a crew that you can't continue shooting because they've left the room sobbing. It was very hard. I struggled even working on it because what you're seeing is what they felt not just about Finn but Cory,” he added. The filming of the Monteith tribute was most difficult for Michele who will sing “Make You Feel My Love” by Bob Dylan, as her final tribute to on and off screen love.
Be sure to tune in to the “The Quarterback” tribute episode on Oct. 10, at 9 p.m. on Fox, and check out Glee’s “Farwell to Fin” tribute below where you can listen to Lea Michele perform “Make Me Feel My Love.”
