We're not sure if Miley Cyrus thought she was going to be so controversial -- and also emulated -- when she introduced the now infamous twerking to this generation. First she did it in her "We Can't Stop" music video, but it really blew up when she performed alongside (or more like all over) Robin Thicke at the MTV VMA's earlier this year. To talk about her performance yet again would be repeating a very vivid image that's still stuck in our heads, since its latest revival during Halloween, in which many people, celebs included, took it upon them to dress up as Miley, and those coupled ones added Thicke into the costume mix.
Although everyone's initial reaction to twerking was of outrage, it became mainstream. Even the Oxford English Dictionary included it in this years revision. Spokeswoman Katherine Connor Martin said the word "twerk" has been around for 20 years but has generated enough evidence of usage to be added to its online dictionaries with Miley Cyrus hitting headlines for "twerking" at the MTV Video Music Awards. Arising in the early 1990s, the word is described in the dictionary as "a dance to popular music in a sexually provocative manner involving thrusting hip movements and a low, squatting stance."
This week, the "Glee" kids will be no strangers to this craze, igniting major outrage at William McKinley High School. Even Mr. Schue will join and performed a rendition of Robin Thicke's "Blurred Lines," which will include a lot of twerking from the students. He hopes this sexy addition will give New Directions an edge up at Nationals. However, some members are concerned about their their twerking skills. But maybe all that twerk-fun won't last too long because Sue, on the other hand, is taking it upon her to stop all the twerking madness, and in true Sue Sylvester fashion, she will make everything possible to watch this trend come to an end.
"The End of Twerk," how this episode it titled, will feature plenty of Miley references and her song "Wrecking Ball." Besides Thicke's and Cyrus' songs, this episode will also include Funny Girl's "You Are Woman, I Am Man," Beyoncé's "If I Were a Boy" and The Royal Concept's "On Our Way." Glee's season 5, episode 5 airs tonight, Thursday, Nov. 14 at 9 p.m. on Fox. The storyline's synopsis reads the following: "The glee club learns the dance of the hour: twerking. Meanwhile, Marley discovers Jake's relationship with Bree, and Rachel tries to convince Kurt they both should get tattoos."
