Lionsgate Films and Participant Media have announced that they will be producing a film about the largest environmental disaster in US history: BP’s Deepwater Horizon “leak” which flooded the Gulf of Mexico with 210 million gallons of crude oil. The corporation’s negligence killed 11 men working on the platform and injured 17 others, before causing irreparable and immeasurable damage to local ecosystems, revealing just how flawed the regulatory system on deepwater drilling matters. The film will also be closely based on the New York Times investigative piece titled “Deep Water Horizon’s Final Hour” by David Barstow, David Rohde and Stephanie Saul.
Golden Globe winner Gina Rodriguez will star opposite Mark Whalberg in the movie written by Matthew Michael Carnahan and directed by Peter Berg. Rodriguez will be playing 23-year-old Andrea Fleytas; the navigations technician, who had to make the anxious call to the US Coast Guard while her crewmembers jumped into the oily waters to escape the explosion. The film is set to be released in late September 2016 and while there are no further details, the casting news show once again, the plethora of opportunities that have presented themselves to Gina Rodriguez, and we could not be happier for her!
