Bundesliga's 25-year-old football star Atakan Karazor has been reportedly arrested, Thursday, on suspicion of raping a teen girl at a villa in Ibiza.
The club confirmed Karazor was being held and said they were currently in "constant contact" with their legal team. The sportsman has denied all wrongdoing.
A statement from Stuttgart read, "VfB midfielder Atakan Karazor has been arrested while on holiday in Ibiza. He denies any criminal act. VfB is in constant contact with its lawyers. Since this is an ongoing process, we ask for your understanding that VfB cannot comment further for the time being."
An 18-year-old girl told the authorities that she had been sexually assaulted at a villa in San Jose on Wednesday morning. According to sources, the girl had been admitted to the hospital after the alleged incident. The victims of suspected rapes are checked by hospital staff as a routine measure to look for injuries and STDs.
The villa where the alleged sex attack happened is said to be near Cova Santa, an ancient natural cave with a large restaurant, lounge garden and club where shows and concerts occur during the summer.
The midfielder, who plays for German top-flight side Stuttgart, was arrested alongside another 25-year-old German on Thursday. Karazor and the other man appeared before a judge in Ibiza Town in a closed court hearing; police also questioned them before being taken to court.
The two suspects have not yet been charged with any crime, as in Spain, formal charges are only given shortly before trial. But both are now "investigados" under Spanish law, which means they are being formally investigated as part of a criminal probe into a suspected sex attack.
Meanwhile, Karazor has just signed an extended contract with Stuttgart, one of Germany's most successful clubs for three years until 2026. He became part of the squad in July 2019.
A spokesman for the Civil Guard also confirmed, "Two German nationals have been arrested after a woman told police she had been sexually assaulted in Ibiza. An investigation is ongoing." Another source added, "One of the two men is a footballer who plays in the Bundesliga."
