Texas Rangers catcher Geovany Soto will be out for 10-12 weeks due to a torn lateral meniscus in his right knee. He is scheduled to have surgery on Wednesday. The Rangers have been doomed with bad news this week, finding this out just one day after they found out that second baseman Jurickson Profar would also be out for the same amount of time with a torn muscle in his right shoulder.
Jon Daniels, Rangers GM said that catching was bigger priority. He stated "We're going to look internally on everything, and we're going to have discussions externally with other teams. We've already had some, and we're going to have some more. It's a tough day from the medical side, but it's an opportunity for some other guys. We're looking to fortify our depth and go from there."
When he spoke about the injuries the team has had this season he said "We've had more than our fair share of injuries. You can't sugarcoat the injuries. We've been dealt that hand; nobody is going to feel sorry for us. Now somebody has to step up."
The Rangers are left with J.P Arencibia and Robinson Chirinos. Arencibia was the Blue Jays’ No. 1 catcher for the past three seasons and signed by the Rangers this season to be Soto’s backup catcher. Chirinos has impressed manager Ron Washington during spring training.
When Soto was asked about his injury he said "It's really unfortunate. I feel devastated, but it's something I can't control."
