With the Prosecution and Defense making their opening statements on Monday, June 24th, Day 2 of the Trayvon Martin murder trial is underway in Seminole County, Florida. George Zimmerman, a neighborhood watch coordinator for a Sanford, Florida community, shot and killed 17-year-old Trayvon Martin in February of 2012 close to where the young man lived because he thought the young man posed a threat to his well-being and safety.

Opening the trial on June 24th after a thorough jury selection, the prosecution is directing their focus on the fact that Zimmerman had a strong desire to become a police officer while citing the path he took to become a neighborhood watchman. Among the many points made yesterday by the prosecution team led by Bernie de la Rionda, pointing out that the bullet shot from Zimmerman's gun pierced and went clean through Martin's heart may carry the most weight in getting the desired outcome the Prosecution and members of Martin's family so desperately want.

While the Prosecution continues their case, the Defense for Mr. Zimmerman will focus their arguments toward the fact that Zimmerman was threatened and in fear for his life because Trayvon Martin grew violent moments before the shooting. After following the 17-year-old because he felt he was acting suspicious, the 28-year-old said he had no option other than to protect himself by shooting Martin. Hoping to use photos and personal messages from martin, the Defense compiled various pictures of Martin that show him as someone who involved himself with negative influences, even photos of the young man smoking weed were collected by the team.

The Defense also wanted to use various text messages from the phone of Martin that could potentially indicate a more violent side to the teenager. Early in the process however, Judge Debra Nelson ruled that the Defense team cannot use the images or text messages as part of their opening statement. George Zimmerman is defended by Mark O'Mara.
