A group of thieves who were behind some of the biggest home invasions in London’s history were reported on Thursday to have been arrested due to one of the robbers texting hotel staff members a dick pic, which was used to identify the robbers one by one.
The original robbery happened in Christmas 2019, when model heiress Tamara Ecclestone and her family posted a picture on Instagram showing them jetting off to Lapland in Finland for the holidays, according to the BBC.
That same night, their home in West London’s Kensington Palace Gardens–which has been dubbed as “billionaire’s row” for its high number of wealthy residents–was robbed of over US$30 million in jewelry, cash, and watches by three unknown assailants, the Daily Beast reported.
Security footage showed the group moving out through Ecclestone’s home, and police questioned multiple cab drivers in the district at the time after footage showed the robbers entering a cab on Kensington Church Road.
They finally had a breakthrough after visiting one of the hotels in the TLK Apartments, which was provided to them by a cab driver, where one of the employees was able to point out a guest they had at the night because of how he kept sending the staff lewd messages and a dick pic during his stay here.
The man was 23-year-old Jugoslav Jovanovic, and the police were able to trace his steps and identify some of his associates who were also involved in other robberies of wealthy individuals, including the US$70,000 burglary of football manager Frank Lampard, and the robbery of seven high-value Patek Philippe watches from the late Leicester City FC owner Vichai Srivaddhanaprabha.
Jovanovic was arrested in Italy in October 2020, with associates Alessandro Maltese and Alessandro Donati being arrested shortly afterwards. They have been extradited to the United Kingdom and pleaded guilty to conspiracy to burgle.
The mastermind of the robberies, however, remains a mystery to the police, with their identity believed to be Alfredo Lindley based on Italian reports. However, the man has 17 reported identities, and none of them has been confirmed by British authorities.
