Good news for “Game of Thrones” fans, a Season 5 premiere date has finally been announced! In approximately 3 months on April 12, 2015, the world of Westeros will finally return to HBO for it’s fifth installment. The network announced the premiere date during the Television Critics Association press tour, in addition to the “Game of Thrones” announcement, HBO revealed the renewal for 10 episode seasons of both “Silicon Valley” and “Veep.” The premiere date news comes in the wake of another big HBO reveal, the network confirmed reports that the highly anticipated Season 5 trailer will be available for viewing at 150 IMAX theaters across the US. In addition the trailer, the final two episodes of Season 4 will be included in the viewing. While still several months away from the premiere episode, which will continue to tell the story of George R.R. Martin’s series “A Song of Ice and Fire,” there is a lot of talk regarding new casting, relationships and perhaps even a budding romance between two unexpected characters. That’s right, recent spoiler reports are claiming that Daenerys Targaryen will begin a lesbian relationship with Missandei, who serves as her advisor, sometimes translator and confidante in the series.
The reports come after Nathalie Emmanuel’s comments at this Sunday’s Golden Globes, the actress who portrays Missandei on the hit series told E! Online, “we see Daenerys being queen and what comes with that, so it's not always smooth sailing but she's got her confidante and friend Missandei to help her along the way." This seemingly casual comment has created a firestorm of stories claiming that Dany and Missandei will have engage in some sort of sexual relationship. Considering their previous relationship and the plot lies between the characters in GRRM’s “A Dance for Dragons,” the reported development in the HBO telling seems highly unlikely. In the book series, Missandei is only 10 years old, and though Dany is not much older than her, there is no sexual promiscuity between the two. In contrast, Daenerys feels an almost maternal protectiveness for Missandei, who was a slave before being freed by her. The two share a close bond, but with more of a mother-daughter dynamic as opposed to lovers.
Although while the books steers clear of this romance, the HBO series may not. First off, both Missandei and Dany are much older in the TV show and provides more a mature storytelling. While the book also inhibits several love scenes, the series brings these racy scenes to life, rarely sparing one detail, meaning that show runners D.B. Weiss and David Benioff are not shy. In addition, there is a particularly explicit moment, although constantly overlooked scene in GRRM’s “A Storm of Swords,” that could influence a one-time encounter between Dany and Miisandei in Season 5 of “Game of Thrones.” In a Daenerys chapter in the novel, it is revealed that after receiving a kiss from Ser Jorah, Dany is aroused and begins to masturbate, however her handmaiden Irri steps in to assist her. “Game of Thrones” has a tendency to consolidate multiple minor characters plot lines into one, so maybe a romantic storyline is on the horizon fro Dany and Missandei in Season 5? We want your opinion; will Dany and Missandei become more than just friends? Comment below and let us know what you think!
