Over the course of four seasons, HBO's "Game of Thrones" have met little interference or objection in shooting their controversial nude scenes. Unfortunately, the team is now facing opposition against a highly anticipated Cersei Lannister nude scene that is pivotal in the book and essential to the story.
According to reports, "Game of Thrones" is currently filming in Dubrovnik, Croatia, and initially intended to shoot the Cersei naked scene outside the Church of St. Nicholas. However, having learned the intentions of the HBO show, the film commission, upon the order of church officials, decided not to hand the production team the filming permits. Essentially, the Church of St. Nicholas holds a lot of power over the Croatian city and also holds a rigid policy against public displays of sexuality.
For a bit of context, the scene in question involves Cersei Lannister and her comeuppance. Following Tywin Lannister's death, Cersei becomes queen regent and rules the King's Landing with an iron fist. Cersei limits the power of the Tyrells and angers the Iron Bank. She establishes a a new royal fleet and resurrects the High Septon's Faith Militant. Last but not least, Cersei frames Margaery Tyrell for adultery. However, the plan bankfires and Cersei finds herself jailed by the High Septon. Before trial, Cersei is shaved bald and forced to perform a naked penance walk from the Great Sept to the Red Keep, all while the public lineup to watch her.
In real life, Cersei's naked walk from the Great Sept to the Red Keep is actress Lena Headey's walk from the Dubrovnik Cathedral to Sponza Palace in Croatia. The distance is two miles. As of now, it looks extremely unlikely that the conservative Croatian church will suddenly change its values overnight. Tht said, there are five possible solutions to this problem.
First, the "Game of Thrones" people could potentially charm the local church (read: pay money) into making a one-time exception. A second solution is to have Lena Headey wear pasties and nude-colored underwear to cover up the naughty bits. Subtle camera angles and post-production magic could suggest nudity while not actually showing it. The third option is to spend a whole stack of money to get the whole production team packing for a new, nude-friendly location to complete the shoot. The fourth option, and in our opinion the most plausible, is to simply shoot the scenes at Dubrovnik, Croatia without a naked Lena Headey. Instead, have Heady perform the naked walk on a green screen at a studio elsewhere and then superimpove a naked Heady to Croatia's environmental elements.
No doubt, Cersei's penance walk is a pivotal moment in the return of "Game of Thrones" Season 5. In fact, Lena Headey even suggested that the idea behind keeping Cersei clothes on for so long was to shock the audience when it was time for this very naked scene. Stay tuned as we learn more "Game of Thrones" spoilers ahead of its Spring 2015 release date.
