Before Selena Gomez took off on her “Revival Tour” and remained so focused on her music, she took some time to make movies for the bug and small screens.
In the film“The Fundamentals of Caring” acquired by (Netflix at the Sundance Film Festival), Gomez stars opposite Paul Rudd and Craig Roberts.
Based on the novel by Jonathan Evison, the story follows a writer (Rudd) who retires after a personal tragedy and becomes the caregiver of an 18-year-old boy who has muscular dystrophy named Trevor (Roberts). When the two embark on an impromptu road trip, their ability to cope is tested but they meet Gomez’s character, a teen who ran away from home and teaches them an important lesson about the importance of friendship.
The cast also includes Jennifer Ehle, Megan Ferguson and Frederick Weller.
This is not Gomez’s sole collaboration with Netflix. According to Variety, the streaming service company was in final negotiations last October to adapt the best-selling young adult novel "13 Reasons Why" as a 13-episode series with Gomez at the helm as an executive producer.
If the show does happen, the idea is that it will be based on the New York Times bestselling book by Jay Asher, created by Pulitzer Prize winner Brian Yorkey, who also wrote the pilot reports Deadline. While it has not been confirmed, many reports are suggesting Gomez will play a high school student who commits suicide in the series. She leaves behind 13 cassette tapes, each one detailing how a specific person contributed to her death.
Along with Gomez, her mother Mandy Teefey, Kristel Laiblin and Anonymous Content also will executive produce the Netflix series "13 Reasons Why."
As for “The Fundamentals of Caring,” the film was written and produced by Rob Burnett and it can be seen on Netflix starting on June 24.
