A freshman college student reportedly killed himself after he was allegedly severely hazed by his college seniors in Gopalganj district, Bihar, India on Saturday, May 28.
The young student, identified as Nirbhay Singh Kushwaha, a first-year polytechnic student, was found dead and hanging from a noose attached to the ceiling in a private lodge at Sipaya locality, under the Vishambharpur Police Station of the Bihar district, on Saturday, May 28.
The locals who discovered the body immediately informed the police about the incident. Following this, the law enforcement rushed to the scene, recovered the body, and sent it for a postmortem examination at Sadar Hospital, the Times Of India reported.
Following the tragedy, the authorities launched an investigation into the incident. When investigating officers questioned Kushwaha's father Abhay, he alleged that his son had confided to him that he was upset after being brutally hazed by the senior students of his college.
"I talked to him on Saturday night around 8 p.m. and had asked him to come home," the patriarch said.
The father also hasn't dismissed the possibility that his son might have also been murdered.
A preliminary investigation conducted by the investigating officers revealed that Kushwaha had stayed alone at the lodge for the last month as his roommate had left and transferred to a different dorm.
Meanwhile, the authorities revealed that no suicide note has been found in the victim's room.
"Prima facie, it seems that a love affair could be the reason behind the suicide. We are investigating the case from all angles," said Amrendra Kumar Sah, Station House Officer (SHO) of the Vishambharpur Police Station.
In a similar but unrelated incident, a 14-year-old schoolgirl allegedly killed herself after she was told to stand outside her classroom as punishment for coming late to school in Tamil Nadu, India on Saturday, March 12, Latin Times reported.
On Saturday afternoon, as school classes started after the lunch break, a teacher had asked the girl and several other students who had come back late to stand outside their classroom for 10 to 15 minutes as punishment. The girl was allegedly also singled out by the teacher because the teen student was the class representative. Chastising the girl, the teacher said that another student should be given charge of the class as she was frequently late for lectures.
However, after the 15 minutes outside, when the teacher allowed the children to get back in the class, the girl complained of feeling an urge to vomit and excused herself to the lavatory.
When the student did not return after a while, the teacher asked other pupils to check on her. However, by then, the girl had climbed to the second floor and taken her own life by jumping off the school building. Even though the teachers rushed her to a hospital, she was declared dead upon arrival.
