In a Fox News segment on Sept. 19 called "The Grapevine", guest-hosted by Chris Wallace, the program referred to children of undocumented immigrants as "children of the corn" with a graphic, reported Media Matters. The host was summarizing a recent analysis by Los Angeles County estimating how much government assistance undocumented parents would receive this year in 2013. The data concluded that an estimated 60,000 parents with 100,000 children would get about $650 million. The report did not mention that the children of the undocumented parents are U.S. citizens. "Children of the Corn" Is a 1977 short story written by Stephen King that depicts a cult of children who murder all adults in a small town. The story was later remade into a horror movie in 1984.

It is not clear why Wallace or Special Report decided to use the label "children of the corn" or if it relates to the Stephen King story. A Huffington Post article pointed out that corn is a staple in Mexican food. The same report also showed a graphic that used the term "alien nation." The Associated Press Stylebook dropped the use of the term "illegal immigrant" earlier this year because it is dehumanizing and legally inaccurate. The use of the term "illegal alien" is also forbidden by the AP Stylebook. It argues that a person cannot be illegal, but a person's actions can be. Immigration reform advocates in the Senate have preferred the use of the term "undocumented." Watch the Fox News segment branding Latino kids as "children of the corn" below.
