Barbara McQuade, a former U.S. attorney for the Eastern District of Michigan from 2010 to 2017, criticized the Trump administration decision to abruptly switch course and unfreeze federal grants on Jan. 29, just days after facing intense backlash for halting roughly $3 trillion in spending.

In a memo issued by Matthew J. Vaeth, acting director of the White House Office of Management and Budget (OMB), officials said the order that had temporarily halted the disbursement of federal financial assistance was rescinded.

This decision was critiqued by McQuade, who on her Bluesky social media account said "the incompetence" of the Trump administration is the "only thing saving America at the moment."

The Trump Admin really has no idea what they’re doing, do they? Their incompetence is the only thing saving America at the moment.

The now professor at the University of Michigan Law School added the Trump administration "really has no idea what they're doing, do they?"

McQuade has been a vocal critic of Trump. On Jan. 28, she condemned the decision to remove a dozen federal prosecutors that served in the office of Special Counsel Jack Smith and participated in cases that charged President Donald Trump with interfering with the 2020 election and unlawfully retaining government documents.

In the opinion piece published by Bloomberg, McQuade says the motive behind their immediate termination was for playing a "significant role in prosecuting President Trump."
