Former NBA basketball player Donte Greene was arrested on Thursday for attempting to rob a gas station in Indiana, with police officers in the area imprisoning him after receiving calls of the attempt.
Greene, a 34-year-old professional basketball player, was reportedly at a gas station in Goshen when he “lunged” towards a gas station clerk and demanded that the clerk “give him all the money” before threatening the clerk further, according to Sports Illustrated.
Police officers in the area received a call about a drunk driver around the same time, before receiving the call about a man attempting to rob a gas station, reportedly called in by employees in a nearby Taco Bell branch after seeing Greene enter the gas station, the New York Post reported.
The video footage acquired by police showed Greene walking around the store before the robbery, removing items from his pocket and then taking off his shirt for no reason. Footage also caught him moving and jumping towards the clerk. He did not have a weapon on his person during the robbery.
Greene was immediately arrested once officers in the area arrived at the gas station, and he is being held in Elkhart County jail with no announced bail. It’s unclear if a court appointment has been scheduled for his charges, or if he will be charged for any alcohol-related crimes.
Well-known for his stint in Syracuse University under the legendary basketball coach Jim Boeheim in his freshman year, he was drafted 28th overall by the Memphis Grizzlies in 2008. He was traded to the Houston Rockets shortly thereafter. Green eventually played for the Boston Celtics and the Sacramento Kings, till 2013 for over 253 games.
He left the Kings in 2013 to focus on playing overseas, and he played at ESPN’s “Basketball Tournament” under Syracuse’s alumni team in 2017.
