A 67-year-old former Indian army man, who was serving jail time for allegedly murdering his daughter-in-law and three members of his tenant's family including a child, was found hanging in the prison’s washroom on Tuesday, Oct.5.
The deceased, who has not been identified by the police, was lodged in Gurugram's Bhondsi jail on Aug. 27 after he committed the crime on Aug. 25.
He was arrested for allegedly killing his daughter-in-law and three members of his tenant’s family in Rajendra Park.
According to the police, the jail staff could not locate the convict during the routine attendance and found him hanging dead at 6.40 am in the washroom.
"The incident took place between 3 am and 4 am on Tuesday. No suicide note has been recovered so far. We are probing the matter," Jagbir Singh, Station House Officer (SHO), Bhondsi police station said, the Times of India reported.
The suspect had used a towel to hang himself to death, police said.
On Aug. 25, the now-deceased man had surrendered before the police with a bloody machete in his hand and confessed that he killed his daughter-in-law and three members of his tenant's family, including their nine-year-old daughter.
The tenant’s 3-year-old daughter had survived the attack and was admitted to Safdarjung hospital in Delhi with critical stab injuries.
The accused’s wife was also arrested for being part of the conspiracy and for accompanying him while he hacked the four to death.
During detailed probing, the accused confessed that he suspected that his daughter-in-law was having an illicit affair with his tenant and he committed the murder as the relationship bothered him.
However, the tenant’s family had denied the affair and alleged that they had a rent-related dispute with the accused.
The family of the deceased daughter-in-law alleged that the accused and his was eyeing a plot in her name and killed her to grab it.
The ex-army man's death is being investigated. The body was recovered and sent to a medical examiner's office for an autopsy. The results were being awaited.
The police said a magistrate is conducting a judicial inquiry.
