
A Texas man allegedly swallowed $769,000 worth of jewelry during a botched robbery in Florida, according to a report.
Jaythan Lawrence Gilder, 32, pretended to be a representative of an NBA player on the Orlando Magic to gain access the jewelry in a private viewing room, News Channel 8. The incident occurred at Tiffany & Co.
After he got access to the jewelry, Gilder allegedly forced his way out of the store with a pair of 4.86 carat diamond earrings worth $160,000 and a pair of 8.19 carat diamond earrings worth $609,500. Gilder also reportedly had a ring that was worth $587,000, the station reported.
The escape from the store was caught on surveillance cameras, Fox 35 reported. Also, an employee was injured in the altercation. The station said that Gilder then fled the area, but his car was located by police two days later Interstate 10 in the Florida Panhandle.
The station reported that arrest documents state that as he was being arrested, Gilder swallowed several objects. Once in custody, police scanned Gilder, and several foreign objects were detected inside his body. When told police would wait for Gilder to pass the items and that he would face charges, Gilder told officers that he "should have thrown them out the window," Fox 32 reported.
Gilder faces charges of grand theft and robbery with a mask, clickorlando.com reported. The outlet reported that Gilder was charged in connection with a similar robbery in Texas in 2022 and that he had 48 outstanding warrants in Colorado.
