A Palm Beach County man was arrested Friday night after allegedly making threats on social media to kill President Donald Trump, authorities announced Saturday.
Shannon Depararro Atkins, 46, was taken into custody following an investigation by the FBI and West Palm Beach police. Officials say the FBI received a tip from an Okeechobee resident regarding Atkins' social media posts.
According to police, Atkins was pulled over near his home on Pacific Grove Drive around 7:30 p.m. while driving a white 2013 BMW 750Li. Officers discovered he was in possession of cocaine at the time of his arrest, WPLG reported.
A flyer released by authorities revealed two of Atkins' Facebook posts that triggered the investigation. One post read, "Jan 20th is the Day of Mourning for USA," to which Atkins added the caption, "Bullets please. Please Jesus! Save America."
"I've been banned from 'X' because I said I hope and pray someone kills him," another post read. "History is supposed to repeat itself. We haven't had an assassination in years."
Police said Atkins admitted to writing the posts and was booked into the Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office Main Detention Center. He faces charges of written or electronic threats to kill, do bodily injury, or conduct a mass shooting or act of terrorism, along with possession of cocaine.
The U.S. Secret Service is now assessing whether Atkins will face federal charges related to the threats.
