Seven Florida Democratic representatives are being criticized by GOP counterparts after voting against the Violence Against Women by Illegal Aliens Act, a bill proposed by South Carolina Rep. Nancy Mace (R) which looks to deport undocumented immigrants convicted of sex crimes or domestic violence.
The legislation, which passed the U.S. House in September with bipartisan support (215 Republicans and 51 Democrats vote in favor) also makes individuals convicted of or admitting to such crimes ineligible to remain in the United States.
Republican Party of Florida Chairman Evan Power (R) criticized the Florida Democrats who voted against the bill, saying in a statement that "these irresponsible, if not crazy, Florida Democrats are more interested in protecting illegal aliens who are criminal sex offenders than protecting Floridians," adding that "we will make sure voters remember this vote."
Among the Florida Democrats who voted "no" were Reps. Kathy Castor, Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick, Lois Frankel, Maxwell Frost, Darren Soto, Frederica Wilson, and Debbie Wasserman Schultz. Republican Rep. Jared Moskowitz of Florida was the only Democrat from the state to support the bill.
The statement by the Florida GOP was published a day after Tech entrepreneur and upcoming Co-Chair the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) took to social media to comment on the vote, criticizing the Democrats who voted against the legislation:
Supporters of the bill argue it addresses public safety, while opponents claim it unfairly stigmatizes immigrant communities and undermines due process.
"If this proposal became law, it would violate due process," immigration attorney based in Tallahassee Elizabeth Ricci told The Latin Times. "While I cannot speak for the particular lawmakers who voted against it, I imagine their reasoning is that they are concerned that once one group's due process rights are violated, others' Constitutional violations will follow. We will go down the slippery slope where Americans are not protected."
Undocumented immigrants have been at the forefront of the political conversation as of late, and President-elect Donald Trump's "Border Czar" Tom Homan is prepared to carry out mass deportations that will target illegal immigrants who are criminals.
