It’s been a bad few weeks for “The Flash” fans. Following rumors of Carlos Valdes and Danielle Panabaker leaving the series after Season 5, there is now word going around that Harrison Wells actor Tom Cavanagh may also be on his way out.
The fan-favorite actor will reportedly depart from the show after the next big Arrowverse crossover, “Crisis On Infinite Earths.” The story of Cavanagh's many characters will apparently wrap up on the highly anticipated crossover.
If this is to be believed, then “The Flash” will feel very different after Season 5. Cisco, Caitlin and Wells are the brains in the team. Losing them is definitely going to be a major blow to the show, not to mention the lives of the characters that will remain.
After all, they were the first people to learn and help Barry become the superhero he is today. So what will the show look like with a Team Flash-shaped hole in it?
There is no telling what can happen for sure. The CW has big things planned for the upcoming Arrowverse crossover, “Crisis On Infinite Earths.” This is the story arc that the show has been building up to since its inception, so it is expected to change the dynamics of the series, as well as the whole small screen universe in general. If all three are leaving, this might be a way to do it.
With the three gone, “The Flash” is left with characters who are in the police line of work. Maybe this may be a good time to shy away from the science mumbo jumbo and focus on crime solving.
This could mean that Hartley Sawyer’s Ralph might get more time to shine in Season 6. The Elongated Man will get the chance to show more of his detective skills.
On the other hand, Iris can also offer up leads and information through her connections as a journalist. Barry will also get to show off his CSI skills again, which will surely delight fans. This side of Barry has not been shown on the show for so long that it looked like he's gone full time as The Flash.
“The Flash” often forgets how smart Barry actually is. He’s got himself out of the toughest of jams in the past. Sometimes, Cisco and Caitlin will be out of commission. Cisco hasn't appeared in some Season 5 episodes so far.
Perhaps the show can fully explore a previous revelation in the first season about his promotion to captain of the Central City Police Department.
Meanwhile, Jesse Lee Martin’s status as a main cast member is also up in the air, with the actor still recuperating from his injury. If he is coming back after Season 5, with Cecile in tow, it’s going to be a full-on sci-fi cop drama.
With the nature of “The Flash,” however, it might just jump way into the future. With the Arrowverse shows starting to bring kids to the picture, it would seem as though The CW is preparing for the next-generation versions of their established heroes.
Whatever the writers have planned for Season 5, Nora can help the team in the science department. However, that will involve basically breaking the rules of time travel. Her being in the present timeline is bad enough. Her having to stay will break apart all of time.
They could also bring Tracy back, the scientist and physicist who helped them develop a weapon against Savitar. Someone’s got to make the gadgets after all. Many fans adored her short stint on “The Flash” Season 4, and they were hoping ever since for her to come back.
“The Flash” might also introduce new characters to the fold. There are rumors going around that comic book favorite Godspeed is headed to the show. He isn’t exactly a friend to Barry, though. His presence, however, will help the show potentially shift focus to a crime drama.
In the comics, the supervillain-turned-anti-hero August Heart was a detective and Barry’s former partner.
At the very least, the show can pluck a scientist from the multiverse. Jesse Quick can be brought back too. After all, actress Violett Beane’s show “God Friended Me” has ended already.
With so much still to come on the show, however, fans will just have to wait and see. “The Flash” Season 5 returns tomorrow after a three-week hiatus with “King Shark Vs. Gorilla Grodd.”
