Five U.S. cities are among the world's most violent 50, according to a new report. The document, released by Mexico's Citizens Council for Public Safety and Justice, shows that practically all cities featured in the list are in Latin America and the Caribbean, as well as the U.S. The only exception is South Africa, with 5 cities in the list.
Memphis, Tennessee is the U.S. city ranking highest on the list, at 25th. The others are in the bottom ten: Baltimore ranked 40th, the others being New Orleans (45th), Detroit (46th) and Cleveland (48th).
Mexico has 20 cities in the ranking, seven of them in the top 10. However, the top place on the list went to Port-au-Prince, the capital of Haiti, most of which is dominated by gangs that have laid siege on the government.
The ranking was determined by taking into account the number of murders per 100,000 residents. Colima, Acapulco, Manzanillo, Tijuana and Ciudad Obregon, all Mexican cities, followed the Haitian capital on the list. Culiacan, the capital of Sinaloa and where a bloody turf war between two factions of the eponymous cartels has been taking place since last September, is not on the top 10, ranking 17th and 10th in Mexico.
