Five individuals, including a pregnant woman, were shot and killed early Sunday inside a home in the northeast side of Indianapolis. City police said the incident was the result of a targeted attack after receiving a report around 4 a.m. about a person who got shot.
Sgt. Shane Foly of the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department said authorities first found a juvenile male with gunshot wounds and later received information leading them to a home a block away, where they discovered the other victims who were already dead from gunshot wounds.
According to a New York Post report, Kezzie Childs, 42, Raymond Childs, 42, Elijah Childs, 18, Rita Childs, 13, and pregnant mother Kiara Hawkins, 19, were pronounced dead after being found in the home, Foley said.
"Despite the best life-saving efforts provided by medical staff, both the female and the unborn child did not survive," he added
Police said the juvenile male that was shot may have been wounded from the shooting and is expected to survive his injuries.
IMPD Chief Randal Taylor said they believe the deadly shooting was not random but was a targeted attack carried out by one or more assailants.
As of Sunday afternoon, authorities have not named any suspects related to the shootings, CNN reported.
The gruesome incident happened just days after the police department had announced their strong stance to combat violent drug-related crimes as well as “violence driven by poverty or desperation”.
“But what we saw this morning was a different kind of evil. What happened this morning, based on the evidence that’s been gathered so far, was mass murder," Taylor said at a news conference.
It was reportedly the largest mass casualty shooting in the city in more than a decade, Taylor added.
City Mayor Joe Hogsett said that he had contacted officials with the FBI's Indianapolis field office, the local U.S. Attorney's office and other law enforcement agencies for assistance in the investigation.
"Federal law enforcement is coming for them, as I speak. Coming for them today, coming for them tonight, coming for them tomorrow and the day after that. Coming for them as long as it takes to find them," Hogsett added.
