After putting out a turkey fire on Thanksgiving, a group of California firefighters took the bird back to their station and finished cooking it for the family.

Engine 28 in San Francisco received a call about an oven fire from a family that lived just a block away from the station. The family's oven had caught fire, but was out by the time the firefighters arrived, as reported by NBC Bay Area.

The fire ended up restarting after the crew had wiped down the oven. They determined that turkey grease had gotten near the oven's heating mechanism, which was unreachable by the firefighters.

So two of the firefighters offered to take the turkey back to the station and cook it there.

"Two and a half hours later, the turkey was brown and crisp and delicious looking," firefighter Osayande Aikhionbare told NBC Bay Area. "We were very happy and honored to be able to take it back up to them and to make sure that they were able to enjoy a wonderful Thanksgiving dinner."

Oven fires are extremely common around the holidays, such as Thanksgiving. Engine 28 shared that their station responded to multiple calls about similar fires that day.

The National Fire Prevention Association recommends never leaving the kitchen while something is cooking, and to check on whatever it is you are cooking regularly. Anything that can catch fire, such as oven mitts and towels, should be kept at least three feet away from the cooking area.

In the event of an oven fire, NFPA says to turn off the oven and keep it closed until it is certain that the fire is out. For grease fires, NFPA recommends turning off the burner and sliding a lid over the pan.
