5 Things To Know About São Paulo

São Paulo, Brazil is the inaugural host city of the FIFA World Cup Brazil 2014! The world will get their first peek into this marvelous country via the Arena Corinthians, one of the newest state of the art stadiums. The Arena de Sao Paulo has been chosen to host the Opening Match of Brazil 2014 and will also welcome five other encounters, including one semifinal. Its capacity will be 62,601. What else is there to know about the host city? Here are five things to know about São Paulo:

1. Largest City In Brazil: São Paulo is the largest city in the South American country, the largest city proper in the southern hemisphere and the seventh largest city by population in the world. The city of SP is within the state of São Paulo, the most populous in Brazil. 2. Named After A Saint: The name of the city is in honor of Paul the Apostle. He taught the gospel of Christ to the first-century world and found several churches in Asia and Europe. 3. People: People from São Paulo city are actually called "Paulistanos," while those from São Paulo State are called "Paulistas."

4. Climate: The city has a monsoon-influenced humid subtropical climate. Temperatures are said to be similar to Los Angeles. Since they are below the equator, their summer's run from January through March with an average of 82F and low of 63F, while the winter has a high of 73F and a low of 52F. 5. Ethnicities: There are many ethnic communities in Sao Paulo: Portuguese, Italian, German, Japanese, American, and some smaller communities such as Middle Eastern and French.

As the players for each team practice, so are performers for the opening ceremony. The show will take place in São Paulo, Brazil at the 68,000-seat New Corinthians Stadium and will run for about 25 minutes. After much debate Jennifer Lopez confirmed her assistance to the event where she will join Pitbull and Brazilian singer Claudia Leitte singing "We Are One (Ole Ola)," official theme song of the games. More than 600 dancers, gymnasts and stilt walkers will perform alongside a huge LED ball that will turn the arena into a great carnival.
