Multiple pileups that involved 27 vehicles occured on the Georgia Interstate 16 Wednesday morning. According to officials at the scene, at least three victims were killed and another twelve were quickly escorted to a local hospital. The specific number of victims injured has not been confirmed. Eyewitnesses report that the interstate was in a blanket of fog this morning, causing forward visibility to only reach a quarter-mile or less. Investigators suspect that fog is the likeliest cause of the fiery pileup.
"Once we got there, the fog was kind of lifted at the scene," says Laurens County EMS director Terry Cobb who responded to the central Georgia incident. Cobb told the Associated Press that at least six vehicles were on fire when authorities arrived.
A report from the Georgia State Patrol announced that a total of four separate accidents had occured near the town of Montrose, just 40 miles southeast of Macon. The first incident occurred at approximately 8:10 a.m. In total, 27 vehicles were involved including six commercial vehicles and an empty gasoline tanker truck, which punctured and caught fire. 7 miles of highway between Savannah and Macon were closed, forcing cars to navigate around a detour.
