Customers who purchased Fresh Gourmet Tortilla Strips Santa Fe Style in the past month might be up for a surprise when they find crispy onion strips inside their store-bought pouches instead. Sugar Foods, the brand behind the product, is recalling the tortilla chips after several customers reported the mix-up.
To further complicate the situation, the crispy onion strips contain a wheat allergen that is not listed on the tortilla strip pouches, putting customers with wheat allergies at risk. The Food and Drug Administration alerted the public about the dangerous mistake on Friday.
"People who have a wheat allergy or severe sensitivity to wheat run the risk of serious or life-threatening allergic reactions if they consume the product," according to the announcement.
Sugar Foods indicated that the mix-up affected 3.5-ounce pouches with a best-buy date of June 20, 2025, and UPC Code 7 87359 17504 6. The stand-up resealable pouches were distributed between Sept. 30 and Nov. 11 to distribution centers in 22 states, including Arizona, California, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Iowa, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Maryland, Maine, Michigan, Minnesota, North Carolina, New Jersey, Ohio, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Texas, Utah, Virginia, and Washington.
The company was first notified about the possible contamination last week, per ABC News. The FDA has reported "no illnesses" to date. Affected customers have been encouraged to exchange their products for a refund at the original purchase location.
