Colorado university student Alexander Heit died on April 3 in a car crash in Greeley, Col. He was 22.

A week later, his grieving family has released a photo of his iPhone, in which there was a half written, unsent text message - the reason why he crashed.

Police have said that before Heit could finish his message, which he was typing while driving, he drifted into the wrong lane and into oncoming traffic. He realized he had come out of the lane and jerked his steering wheel but it was too late - his vehicle went flying off the road.

Heit was left with fatal injuries and he died shortly after. He had never had a driving ticket and was not speeding.

The tragedy has highlighted the concerns authorities have as drivers increasingly check texts and even typed them while they drive, often with worrying consequences.

Heit's parents are hoping that a photo of the fatal text message he was trying to send when he died will serve as a warning to others and hopefully save lives.

"I cannot bear the thought of anyone else having to go through this ... Please, vow to never, never text and drive. In a split second you could ruin your future, injure or kill others, and tear a hole in the heart of everyone who loves you," said Sharon Heit, mother of the late Alexander.
