At 7:55 AM this morning, an altercation between two workers in the Jefferson North Chrysler Assembly Plant ended with one worker fatally stabbed to death. The victim was pronounced dead at the scene.
Shortly after, the suspect auto worker was found dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound inside a Jeep Wrangler stopped at Belle Isle, a nearby city park. According to a spokesperson from the Detroit Police Department, the cause of the incident is unknown but the two men involved had a history of not getting along.

In response to the tragic incident, Chrysler has shut down its Detroit plant and employees were released from the facility five at a time. In total, the Chrysler plant employs 3,075 waged and salaried workers. The Jefferson North plant is one of the most important assembly lines for the Pentastar brand as it is responsible for making the Jeep Grand Cherokee and Dodge Durango SUVs.
By 2013, the Jefferson plant was slated to expand an additional line for the Maserati Kubang SUV as well. Given the heavy magnitude of the tragedy, it is unclear whether the deaths would affect Chrysler's short-term plans.
