Ashley Riggitano, recent Laboratory Institute of Merchandising graduate, committed fashionista suicide Wednesday, Feb. 6, 2013, the first day of the New York Fashion Week. She jumped off of the George Washington Bridge on her 22nd birthday. Ashley Riggitano's Louis Vuitton purse was found at the scene and allegedly contained a "suicide diary" that included the names of five girls she did not want to attend her funeral. Her purse also contained Adderall, a psychostimulant medication, and Klonopin, which is used to control seizures in epilepsy and for the treatment of panic disorders.
On the alleged "grudge list" at the scene of the fashionista suicide was the name of a man who apparently did not treat her well in the past. She wrote that she "hopes he gets what he deserves."
One of the notes read: "All my other 'friends' are in it for gossip ... never there," according to the New York Post. "Never there."
Was Ashley Riggitano bullied at school and work? Her fashionista friends will certainly feel the impact of her death this New York Fashion Week.
This isn't the first time an alleged victim of harassment and bullying has ended their life on the GWB. In September 2010, 18-year-old Tyler Clementi leapt to his death after classmates Dharun Ravi and Molly Wei set up a secret webcam in his dorm room. The two viewed footage of him kissing another man without his permission.
Earlier today, Victoria Van Thunen (Ashley Riggitano's best friend and business partner) allegedly wrote on her Facebook:
"Those who incessantly blame others as the cause of their issues should perhaps take a step back and reevaluate these situations. The common thread may be that 'they' aren't the problem, but rather that YOU are."
New York Fashion Week designers take special notice to the tragedy. Ashley Riggitano has worked for Tommy Hilfiger, Nicole Miller and Alex Woo. Alex Woo, the New York-based designer for whom Ashley Riggitano worked as a public relations and wholesale employee, told the Daily Mail she didn't think of Ashley Riggitano as mentally unstable.
"She always had a smile on her face ... she didn't look depressed," said Alex Woo, the jewelry designer for whom Ashley Riggitano worked, to the Daily Mail.
Despite this, Ashley Riggitano has allegedly tried to kill herself before prior to her successful attempt on New York City's George Washington Bridge.
Was Ashley Riggitano mentally ill or is she a victim? Was she driven to fashionista suicide by her so-called "frenemies"?
