A family of seven was found secretly living inside a northern Nevada children’s museum where the mother and father worked. The janitor and his wife were also secretly storing a cache of weapons in the hideout they shared with their five children, according to authorities.

The shocking discovery was made on June 30, at the Children's Museum of Northern Nevada after their 2-year-old child was spotted walking nearby unsupervised.

Authorities said this wasn’t the first time they interacted with the museum janitor, 41-year-old Wilbert Calhoun about an unsupervised kid.

"Officers at the scene were able to evaluate that the call was associated with a previously known call and that it originated from the Children’s Museum," said Sheriff Ken Furlong.

However, this time deputies spoke to Calhoun’s older daughter who told them she lived in the museum, according to the Carson City Sheriff’s Office.

Upon searching the museum, investigators found sleeping bags, mattresses, clothes, food, and the arsenal cluttered in a storage area off-limits to visitors.

A police report listed, an AK-47 rifle, three handguns, a pistol, ammunition, knives, suppressors, and a Taser, as well as drug paraphernalia, all of which "could easily be accessed by a wandering child," according to the police report, obtained by KRNV.

"I’ve never seen anything like this before," Furlong said, according to television station KOLO.

Calhoun was arrested and charged with child neglect and endangerment and possession of a suppressor and a short barrel rifle.

It remains unclear if the janitor’s wife, a museum manager, would face any charges but she and her husband were both fired from the museum.

In a statement, the board of directors said, "we are shocked and saddened that this happened on our watch, and we are working hard to make sure that nothing like this will ever happen again. We are looking into the best path to reopen in a way that not only assures the safety of all of our visitors but that we as a community can be proud of as well."

For the last four years, Jennifer Trotter’s children have been going to the museum’s summer camp, but now she is scared to send her kids there.

"I felt sick," said Trotter told KOLO TV. "That makes me really scared ‘cause I have a seven-year-old boy who would’ve found those things very interesting."
