Family of California shipyard worker crushed to death by machinery irate over company's silence: 'I want answers'

The family of a shipyard worker who died while on the job is demanding answers from his employer, as they describe opacity in the information given to them following the fatality.

J.C. Adame's daughter, Isabelle, told Fox 5 News the family is still struggling to understand the circumstances of his death, as they were only told that it was a result of injuries sustained from a heavy piece of machinery.

"They told us that all of his coworkers tried to lift it up themselves off of him, so I know he will be missed and loved," Isabelle said.

However, she went on to criticize the company, General Dynamics National Steel and Shipbuilding Company (NASSCO), saying she didn't find out from them but from his friends, and waited at the shipyard for hours on Monday without being told anything about her father's state.

"So for them to say an accident would happen, something is not right. I want answers. I know that it wasn't my daddy. There's no way. There's no way," she said.

NASSCO, on its end, issued a statement saying it can't share further details as it continues to investigate the incident. "Out of respect for the family, and as we investigate the incident we cannot share any further details at this time. There are no words that can suffice at this moment. Our deepest sympathies go out to the family – and the entire NASSCO team is keeping them in our thoughts during this tragedy."

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration and Harbor Police are also investigating the fatality, with a report expected within the next six months.
