A Baton Rouge, Louisiana family became among the wealthiest in the world for at least three days following a technical glitch that caused their bank to erroneously deposit a whopping $50 billion into their account.
Real estate agent Darren James and his partner were conducting routine bank transactions over the weekend when they were flabbergasted by the multi-billion figure sitting in their Chase Bank joint account. The Louisiana couple immediately phoned the bank to report the error, according to the New York Daily News.
“That’s not like a one zero error or a two zero error, that’s somebody that fell asleep on the keyboard error,” James said. “I was excited for sure. Really surprised how it got there and wondered if I had a rich uncle that gave it to me.”
The couple then spent the weekend trying to come up with explanations of how and why their bank account received the $50 billion. They said they believed other Chase Bank customers also noticed some banking slip-ups.
“The concern is whether my account was compromised, and the bank hasn’t even called me. We haven’t heard anything from anyone,” the Louisiana father added.
Three days later, on Tuesday, Chase Bank confirmed they have fixed the error and restored the actual balance into the couple's account, ABC13 reported.
“We had a technical glitch a couple of weeks ago impacting a limited number of accounts. The issue was resolved one day later and all accounts are showing accurate balances,” Chase Bank spokeswoman Amy Bonitatibus explained.
Chase Bank insists they have immediately responded to reports of the errors just a day later. However, James maintained they got access to the $50 billion for three days.
The father said they never considered spending the money they mysteriously received because they knew it wasn't theirs. Had he ended up with the whopping $50 billion, James would most likely bless others with the fortune money.
“My moral compass only goes one way and that’s the correct way,” he said. “There’s a big difference between morality and legality. Honesty and good moral character immediately kicked in, we can’t do anything with the money. I didn’t earn it, it’s not ours to spend.”
The couple was able to screenshot the glitch through their mobile banking app as a souvenir from the multi-billion dollar slip-up, according to NPR.
Law enforcement is reminding people they may be charged or possibly jailed if they spend funds that were mistakenly deposited into their bank accounts.
In 2019, a Pennsylvania couple was slapped with felony theft charges after their finance institution accidentally deposited $120,000 into their account. The couple reportedly spent a massive portion of the money instead of phoning the bank to report the glitch.
