Atlanta Falcons safety William Moore was arrested Thursday afternoon on a simple battery charge.
CBS Atlanta notes that police officers responded to a phone call regarding a dispute between Moore and an unidentified woman that had taken place in the northwest part of Atlanta.
Atlanta police department spokesman Carlos Campos said in a statement that Moore "threw the victim's phone and grabbed the victim's shoulder," according to the Yahoo! Sports.
Following a court appearance on Friday, the 27-year-old University of Missouri graduate was released on $2,500 bond as reported by CBS Sports.
Starting in all 12 games he appeared in last season, Moore had a career-best campaign, helping the Falcons advance to the NFC Championship game. Tying a career-high in tackles with 59, Moore also recorded one sack and 4 interceptions during the Falcons 13-win season. His career-best interception total came during the 2010 season when the 4-year pro totaled 5 picks.
Scheduled to become a free agent following the 2012-2013 season, Atlanta inked the safety to a five-year, $30 million extension. The renewed deal includes $14 million in guaranteed money, an additional $8.25 million thanks to a signing bonus and the new deal guarantees Moore a base salary of $2.25 million for the upcoming year.
Following a pro bowl season in 2012, it remains to be seen if Moore will receive any punishment from the NFL and commissioner Roger Goodell. Depending on what happens in the legal process, any suspension Moore receives could very well void the contract extension plus the incentives he recently signed.
"We are aware of the situation involving William Moore and are in the process of gathering more information," a spokesperson for the Atlanta Falcons said to The Atlanta Journal-Constitution. The spokesperson also noted that because Moore's issue is now a legal matter, the Falcons will no longer be able to comment on any details.
The Falcons fell to the San Francisco 49ers in last season's NFC Championship game and are expected to be serious contenders for a Super Bowl run during the 2013-2014 season.
