Every year, Fundación Telmex hosts a forum called México Siglo XXI (Mexico XXI Century) for over 10,000 of the company’s scholarship holders, in order to enrich the professional careers. In this event, interns got to spend time and listen to prestigious political, business and cultural leaders. The forum is called México Siglo XXI (Mexico XXI Century). While Carlos Slim (the second richest man in the world according to Forbes Magazine) owns the foundation, the event was inaugurated by the tycoon’s eldest son, Carlos Slim Domit. Amongst the highlights of the event was Hillary Clinton who spoke about her experience within American Diplomacy and spoke about announcing her possible candidacy, early next year.
Perhaps the most interesting guest for the younger crowd was Facebook founder and CEO, Mark Zuckerberg, who recognized Mexico “is more connected than most countries in Latin America, but it is insane that only 60 million people have access to the internet.” The entrepreneur mentioned he plans to introduce his internet.org platform to the country and has had talks with the government about the project to grant web access to the rest of the population. Zuckerberg then posted on his Facebook page about meeting President Enrique Peña Nieto and agreeing on the urgency of accelerating the project.
Zuckerberg also flattered billionaire Carlos Slim by saying his first role model was Microsoft founder, Bill Gates since his goal is that every single house has a computer, but now thinks he should follow Carlos Slim's footsteps. During a Q&A at the Forum, Zuckerberg mentioned he has yet to close the deal with WhatsApp in order to continue fulfilling his goal of connecting the entire world. The app would grant Internet access to over 2,500 million people, “… with us, they will have better resources and opportunities to connect the world.”
“It is extremely important to remain grateful and humble. Every day I thank someone who’s done something for me, within or outside of Facebook,” he said in his conclusion. “Stick to your goals, anything you want, everything is possible.”
