On Tuesday morning residents in the city of Rosario, Argentina were woken up by an explosion that killed at least a dozen people and injured 60. Officials say it is likely that a gas leak was the cause of the explosion.
The blast took place at 9:15 local time Tuesday morning. According to CNN there was a man working near the scene of the explosion, he has now been taken into custody. It is unclear why the man was arrested and what role he may have played in the explosion.
The explosion took out an entire apartment complex in the city of Rosario. The mayor of Rosario Monica Rein said the explosion was caused by a gas leak.
The front wing of the 10-story building completely collapsed. Over 50 apartments in a two-block radius were demolished. BBC says people had to be rescued from their fire escapes and balconies.
A resident living in the apartment where the explosion took place told her local newspaper, "I was in the bath when the explosion took place and the ceiling fell over my head. I have lost everything."
According to the witness, via the BBC there was an issue with the building's gas meter. Someone had attempted to rob the gas meter two weeks ago. Residents were told the meter would be repaired on Tuesday and to expect their gas would be shut off between 9 am and 2 pm.
Authorities are still investigating the explosion.
