Michigan Wolverines coach Juwan Howard made headlines recently for that controversial fracas where he punched Wisconsin Badgers’ assistant Joe Krabbenhoft, sparking a melee after the two games played.
The Badgers won that game but it was the timeouts called by the Badgers in the waning seconds that drew Howard’s ire. He was caught on video in a heated exchange with Wisconsin head coach Greg Gard and things just escalated from there.
The scene saw players gathering around the two coaches. Things took a different turn when the former NBA player put his finger on Gard’s face and grabbed the Badgers coach’s sweater. Krabbenhoft tried to diffuse the incident but ended up being a recipient of a Howard punch.
Howard’s actions resulted in an all-out brawl with several players also exchanging blows.
Michigan forwards Moussa Diabate and Terrance Williams appeared to have thrown punches, while Wisconsin guard Jahcobi Neath also appeared to do the same.
"I didn't like the timeout they called, and I'm being totally honest with you," Howard stated. "I thought it was not necessary at that moment, especially with it being a large lead... I thought that wasn't fair to our guys. And so that's what happened."
As a result of the incident, the Big Ten and Michigan have decided on the punishment on the former NBA player. Howard has been suspended for the rest of the season following Sunday’s post-game altercation.
However, the punishment that Howard is due is not expected to stop there. Hefty fines are expected to follow, something that has yet to be announced. Beyond this season, there is no telling what the future holds for the former 49-year-old coach.
Michigan’s first game without Howard will be Wednesday night against Rutgers. The Wolverines are currently on the NCAA Tournament “bubble.”
It should also be noted that this is not the first time that Howard had been involved in heated incidents.
Last year, Howard needed to be restrained when he tried to go after former Maryland Terrapins head coach Mark Turgeon.
