Jozsef Szajer, a senior member of the European Parliament from Hungary’s ruling Fidesz party tendered his resignation. The official admitted that he breached Belgium’s coronavirus lockdown and was part of a private party which was described by local media as a “sex party.”
Szajer was one of about 20 people present at the private party which included some diplomats. Local police were called to scene after neighbors complained of nighttime noise and potential violations linked to COVID-19 restrictions according to Sarah Durant, spokesperson for the Brussel’s public prosecutor’s office.
As police were doing their checks, a bystander reported to authorities that he saw a man climbing down the drainpipe which turned out to be Szajer, CNN reported.
"The man's hands were bloody. It is possible that he may have been injured while fleeing. Narcotics were found in his backpack. The man was unable to produce any identity documents. He was escorted to his place of residence, where he identified himself on the basis of a diplomatic passport as S.J. (1961)," Durant stated.
Aside from breaching protocols, Szajer is also being investigated for possession of narcotics. The 59-year-old denied taking drugs and deeply regreted breaching protocols.
"I offered the police to make an instant test, but they did not do it. According to the police they found an ecstasy pill, but it was not mine, I have no knowledge who and how it (was) placed," he said.
The said gathering was only a few meters from the Brussels Central Police station. The party broke Belgium’s lockdown protocols, including an evening curfew and a cap on indoor gatherings to four people. The set fine for breaking coronavirus restrictions is 250 euros (roughly $300).
Szajer is aware that his actions have dire consequences. He admit that it was an irresponsible move on his part and is ready to face the fine and penalties as a result of his actions. However, he requested everyone properly evaluate his misstep.
"I am the only one who owes responsibility for it. I ask everyone not to extend it to my homeland, or to my political community," Szajer said.
