Gerardo Ortiz’s latest video, “Fuiste Mía,” has been the talk of the town since it was announced that an online petition was asking social media outlets to remove the clip from their websites for promoting femicide.
Since the news broke, several of his colleagues, including Julión Álvarez and Carmen Salinas, have expressed their opinion on the issue and added if they agree or not with the video’s violent content.
On Wednesday, Espinoza Paz joined the conversation and stated that he does not support the story line shown in the footage, because he writes songs about women and heartbreak and he needs them to stay alive to keep doing so.
“In my opinion, it’s great that they live! Even when they hurt us,” said the 34-year-old singer. “It’s a good thing that women exist, they are our other half, even when they treat us bad. I prefer them [women] alive, biting lips, the neck, who cares if they cheat on me? Who cares if they make me suffer?”
After declaring himself as the ultimate women lover, Paz proceeded to comment on the responsibility artists have to set an example through their craft. “There is a responsibility, we all have the responsibility to be role models for citizens. But I also respect everyone’s decision,” he concluded.
Ortiz addressed the issue during a press conference earlier this week and stated, “It was never my intention to offend anyone. Actually, I think my video has gotten everyone talking about this delicate topic and my video shows what is unfortunately happening around the world.”
The petition to take Ortiz’s video down from the Internet has gathered more than 6,000 signatures in the past few days. Even though YouTube has classified the material as “inappropriate for some users,” it has been viewed 25,981,016 times since it was first published on January 28, 2016.
