A toddler in Kenya died allegedly a few days after suffering critical assault injuries from his nanny.
The little boy, Andy Muiruri Kibe died at the Kenyatta University Teaching and Referral Hospital in Nairobi on Saturday, Feb 26, authorities said.
“We have an autopsy report with us and it has indicated that the child had sustained severe internal bleeding and succumbed to the same on a Saturday,” Kiamumbi Deputy Central Intelligence Officer (DCIO), Caroline Gathoni said.
The police began investigating the incident after the child’s mother, Wangui Wambeca raised concerns about her son’s death on social media.
The devastated mother posted photos of her housemaid, Maureen Nyaboke, and urged the public to help in tracing her whereabouts.
Wambeca said she hired Nyaboke on Tuesday, Feb 22, but fired her the very next day.
The mother said she returned home from work to find her toddler sleeping with bruised lips and a head injury.
She confronted the nanny about the injuries but she abruptly evaded her questions before fleeing the scene on foot.
The mother then took her toddler to the hospital, where doctors said the child had suffered critical internal injuries.
One-year-old Kibe died during treatment.
"As soon as the mother filed the report at the station, a manhunt was launched," Gathoni said.
The suspect, who has been on the run, was found taking a nap in a field in Mwihoko when she was arrested on Wednesday, Feb 2, police said.
She is currently being held at the Kiamumbi police station in Kiambu as investigations continue.
"What happened is that the deceased's mother had left for work. Upon returning, she found the child sleeping. The mother later discovered that her kid had bruised lips and had injuries on the back of the head," Kasarani OCPD Peter Mwanzo said.
"Once the mother confronted the house help for answers, she claimed that the child fell on the ground while playing. Upon further questioning, she was hesitant to answer. She escaped from the house that night," Mwanzo stated.
Mwanzo confirmed that investigations are currently ongoing in order to unravel the circumstances that led to the death of the one-year-old child.
"The person that was supposed to watch him broke him and took his life away. God how does one even tell the mother it is going to be okay. How does one start from here...I still can't the right words. I am just broken," Journalist Nyoxx Wa Katta wrote on her social media.
"To the mom, I whisper a deep prayer and ask God to remember you and your family. Rest well Toto," she added.
