#EPNvsInternet has been the trending topic on Twitter and Facebook today, however, a number of international activists have also joined the myriad of tweets and comments making the rounds. A number of key figures in digital privacy advocacy have spoken out against Enrique Peña Nieto's controversial news telecommunications reform bill. Richard Stallman, president of the Free Software Foundation, "Cyberpunks" authors Jeremie Zimmerman and Jacob Appelbaum have spoken out against the controversial bill.
#EPNvsInternet has become a powerful statement to protect privacy. "We urge that these regulations comply with the United Nations' Resolution on the Right to Privacy in the Digital Era, the Joint Declaration on Programs of Surveillance and their Impact on the Freedom of Expression, carried out by the UN and OAS, and the 13 International Principles on the Upholding of Human Rights in Surveillance of Communication...to ensure the respect of human rights on the Internet," says the open letter signed by a dozen organizations.
International organizations such as Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF), Alternative Informatics Association of Turkey, Artículo 19, Colombia's Fundación Karismadentro, and the Fundación Vía Libre from Argentina have all thrown their support behind the letter. "Democracy is supported on social media. It is a decentralized effort from all citizens, and we feel better represented by a hashtag than by a legislator. This is democracy at its most direct," wrote Mexican activist Robles Maloof.
