Cinco De Mayo in Mexico celebrates the 1862 battle in which General Ignacio Zaragoza defeated the French army. In his speech commemorating the event, the President recalled that, thanks to the defeat of the French army, then-president Benito Juárez avoided having other countries threaten Mexico. "Today we affirm that Mexico is a free and sovereign nation, wehre only Mexicans themselves can decide their future." He also explained his commitment to the right for information.
Erique Peña Nieto expressed that "the free expression of ideas and the right to be properly informed are fundamental to consolidate our democracy and accelerate our progress," said the President. "Since my first day I have been exercising a fully democratic presidency, we are a government that listens to the sentiments of the population." Peña Nieto's comments come in the wake of being challenged by "Gravity" director Alfonso Cuarón over his energy reforms.
