Enrique Peña Nieto's Time Magazine cover has been stirring some serious controversy, both in Mexico and here across the border. Two days ago, many outlets, including Huffington Post and Terra.com, published a story discussing rumors that Peña Nieto's government had paid Time Inc. for the cover as some much-needed good publicity. Time Inc. now released a statement denying this claim: this was pure media speculation owing to the outrage sparked in Mexico.
Time Inc. issued the following statement in regards to the cover controversy: "TIME does not accept payment in exchange for editorial coverage under any circumstances. Rates listed on TIME's public media kit refer to the cost of advertising with TIME and have absolutely nothing to do with editorial content." As we mentioned, it is unlikely that Time would indeed compromise itself in such a manner, however, the outrage fueled by the recent cover has been quite considerable.
For our queridos lectores hispanohablantes, Time Magazine has now released a Spanish-language version of the article. You can check it out here. Undoubtedly things in Mexico have been difficult, particularly with the situation in Michoacan. Peña Nieto has certainly proven himself as incompetent on numerous occasions, but to be fair to the new prez, he inherited a country in a tough state of affairs. What do you think?
